Athy’s White’s Castle will be auctioned off at the Shelbourne Hotel on July 6 next.
The 15th century castle has a €50,000 guide price. It is one of 90 properties which will be up for sale as part of the Allsop Space auction, which include a ghost estate in County Kerry and several apartments in Dublin.
Local councillor Thomas Redmond has called for ownership of the castle to pass back into the hands of the local community.
He said he understood that a group of local businesspeople are interested in buying the castle, and returning it to the ownership of the town in the trust of Athy Town Council.
In return, they would get use of the premises and its perimeter for their own business needs.
“I am currently not at liberty to state whom the business group is but it does on the outside seem a win win sitution for the people of Athy,” said Cllr Redmond.
He also called for an immediate council meeting to see if Athy Town Council could itself buy the castle. The councillor yesterday criticized Athy’s record on “letting our history be sold”, referring to the 1982 sale of the Mace of Athy, which is now in San Antonio in Texas.
