Athy planners reject gaming arcade proposal

Athy town planners have rejected an application for an amusement and gaming arcade.

Athy town planners have rejected an application for an amusement and gaming arcade.

Coalquay Leisure Ltd, based in Cork, had applied to open the business on the ground floor of the former Hiberian Bank offices on Leinster Street.

The planners noted the proposed arcade would “injure the amenities and depreciate the value of property in the area, would set an undesirable precedent for similar such development in the area, and would therefore be contrary to the proper planning and sustainable development of the area”.

The decision has been widely welcomed by the local community.

Cathaoirleach Cllr Richard Daly said any gaming is contrary to Athy Town Council byelaws. “We are well catered for in lottery department in Athy and anything that has an adverse effect on people’s disposable income would not be welcomed,” he said.
