KILDARE County Council is being asked to facilitate development at empty buildings in Sallins.

Cllr. Paddy McNamara wants the council’s planning section to to “explain what outstanding issues need resolution” in The Waterways so that potential businesses can take over vacant buildings, including for a different use than originally intended.

The issue is due to come before a council area meeting today (April 16).

It’s understood Cllr. McNamara is referring to the council’s decision to refuse a planning application seeking a change of use from a hotel to a nursing home.

If the nursing home went ahead it could create in the region of 50 jobs.

The request for permission to develop a nursing home at Block K1, the Waterways, has been appealed by the applicant (Sonas Property Holdings Ltd.) to An Bord Pleanala.

The appeal was lodged earlier this year and the case is due to be decided in early June.

Based in Athlone, Sonas provide nursing homes, elderly care homes and childcare facilities throughout Ireland.

The company’s website says Sonas is recognised as the leading professionals when it comes to nursing homes and elderly care homes in Ireland. 
The company is also developing a home care service.

The council refused the 50 bedroom nursing home application at the end of 2012.

The development would have had ancillary accommodation totalling 3551 square metres and 6 car park spaces application.

In January 2004 Ichleigh Developments Ltd. Received planning permission from the council for a 3 storey over basement hotel, comprising 63 bedrooms.

In May 2009 Ichleigh Developments as placed in receivership at the request of the Bank of Ireland.
