A Dail question from Labour TD, Kevin Humphreys and information from Kildare County Council shows that just under 56% of the Council mortgage loans are in arrears over 90 days in the second quarter of this year, compared to 31% for the State as whole.

The Council said it has 690 live local authority loans and the Dail question showed that 386 of these are in arrears over 90 days.

Of the 386, 330 or 85% were in arrears by over 180 days while a futher 56 were behind by between 91-180 days.

On shared mortgage loans, the Council had 360 live loans and 204 were in arrears in the first quarter of this year, according to the Dail question. State wise 2,289 of 4,457 of shared loans were in arrears

Labour Party election candidate, Shane Griffin, has said that the issue of arrears in local authority loans needs to be dealt with.

He said the figures showed that Kildare some of the highest arrears in the country.

The revelation came following a Parliamentary Question by Labour Party TD Kevin Humphries.

Mr. Griffin said there there hasn’t been same concentration on Council loans as on loans made in the private sector, but that there are several options available to people to resolve their situation.
