Bombs and handgun found in Celbridge

Three improvised explosive devices and a handgun were found during a search near Celbridge this afternoon, Thursday February 16.

Three improvised explosive devices and a handgun were found during a search near Celbridge this afternoon, Thursday February 16.

Gardai said that the gun and devices were found as part of ongoing investigations in to the activities of dissident Republicans.

Gardai from the Special Detective Unit carried out a search in an open area near Celbridge this afternoon. The army Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) team were called to the scene and examined the devices.

Gardai said that no arrests have been made and investigations are continuing.

It is the second time in a week that the EOD has been called to investigate an explosive device in Kildare. The unit was called to a house Athy last Friday night, February 17. They carried out a controlled explosion on a suspect package left on a windowsill, which was later declared to be an elaborate hoax.
