Most traders in the town support the notion of two hours of free parking in the town centre in a bid to bring more business in.

“It’s obvious that something has to be urgently done to bring business back into the town and I fully support the efforts of Naas traders to lobby for change,” Mr. Lawless said.

Mr. Lawless, a candidate in the forthcoming local elections, said Naas has a proud tradition as a market town and incentives are needed to restore that.

He also agreed that private car park operators - who enforce regulations with clamping and €120 fines - should also participate in any free parking initiative.

North Kildare Chamber is seeking two hours free parking between 9 and 11 am, every day.
