New cycling club aims to ‘have fun’

Kildare town has a new cycling club.

Kildare town has a new cycling club.

The county’s newest cycling club has been established in Kildare town, but with an unusual name.

The club is called Headstrong Cycling Club, a connection that dates back to last year when a group of cyclists from the area completed a cycled to Sligo in aid of the charity Headstrong.

Headstrong is the national centre for youth mental health, and one of the club’s aims is to raise awareness of the issue and of the importance of an active lifestyle for the sake of your health - mental and physical.

Of course, the other aim of the group is to ride their bikes, which they do every weekend.

Many charitable cycling events attach themselves to a cycling club to take advantage of their infrastructure, know how and insurance. In this instance, the lads in Kildare decided to simply go the whole hog and create their own club, which is registered, for insurance purposes, with Cycling Ireland.

Speaking to the Leinster Leader Ger O’Sullivan made it clear the an easy going approach to cycling was being taken.

There are 27 member so far.

It has an easy going and encouraging atmosphere. “We’re having fun with it, and that’s what it’s all about,” says Ger.
