TRANSITION year students at Naas CBS have handed over a cheque for €660 as part of the TOMATHON, a 250km sponsored walk from Athea in County Limerick to Dublin.
In total this marathon walk by Tom Moran and many others raised over €150,000 for Pieta House.
Pieta House, which is located in Lucan, is a dedicated specialist centre for the prevention of suicide and self- harm. There are also Pieta House outreach centres located in Ballyfermot and Limerick city.
On Friday Tom and his fellow walkers were joined by 25 transition year students from Naas CBS who accompanied the walkers over a 18km (11mile) route from Naas to Rathcoole along the old back roads and country lanes. It was pleasant day and all 25 students undertook the challenge in great spirit. Later that day on the Joe Duffy radio show, Tom paid tribute to the many volunteers including the school students.
Tom Moran is a well- known business man who owns many hotels around Ireland and England, most notably, The Red Cow Moran’s Hotel. Along the route Tom was joined by several celebrities including former Miss Ireland Andrea Roche, Brendan Grace, Red Hurley, Jimmy Denihan and a number of Munster Rugby players. Tom was also awarded the Limerick Person of the year award earlier this year.
Mary Burke a teacher in Naas C.B.S. is a cousin of Tom’s and is also from Tom’s hometown of Athea in Co. Limerick. In all the students and staff raised €880 towards the Tomathon sponsored walk – including a donation from Sallins bus hire operator Tom Cross.
