The Naas Child and Family Project Community Playgroup, which is part of Kildare Youth Services, held a sponsored walk and play event recently to raise much needed funds for the playgroup. In recent years KYS, like other voluntary organisations, has experienced increasing cuts to state funding and is increasingly dependent upon fundraising as an alternative source of income.

Karien Keogh, playgroup leader, explained that the pre school children walked around the Monread Park and raised €340 in total for the playgroup. Karien added that the event couldn’t have happened without the support of the parents who joined in on the day and who helped raise the much needed funds. She highlighted the importance of children at a young age getting involved in community projects and fundraising so that civic awareness starts to develop before they even start primary school.

Karien further added that the children were part of the process of counting the money. They already have a plan in place for what they want the money spent on, which is a trip to a local entertainment venue as part of their summer camp. Trips must now be paid for through fundraising
