Naas company fined over smells

THE largest employer in Naas was fined a total of €10,000 today for breaches of environmental legislation at a sitting of Kilcock District Court today, Friday, March 8.
The Arrow Group Limited, which runs a number of well known enterprises such as QK Meats, Pasta Concepts and Dawn Farm Foods, was first before court last September.
At that time AGL admitted admitted causing or permitting smells on dates in 2011.
Yesterday Judge Des Zaidan imposed the maximum fine of €5,000 on each count.
He also said that the company must pay the costs of the Environmental Protection Agency, which took the case following a series of complaints from local people who live in residential areas close to Arrow’s manufacturing concerns.
Barry Doyle, the solicitor representing the EPA, said these costs amounted to €22,500.
Mr. Doyle told the court that when the EPA inspected the side yesterday (March 6) no odours were present.
However a resident Tom Feighery told the court that “foul cooking odours” were present in his back garden at 11.30pm yesterday.
Arrow’s solicitor Deborah Spence said the company took the issue very seriously and has spent €1m taking steps to eliminate odours.
Ms. Spence said Arrow was working with the EPA and some of the equipment installed to combat smells may need to be adjusted for greater efficiency.
