Major grant issued for Kildare flood report update

ALMOST a quarter of a millions euros has been granted to Kildare County Council to upgrade a flood alleviation study which was initially carried out in 2002.
Labour TD, Emmet Stagg, welcomed confirmation from Minister of State Brian Hayes that €240,000 has been allocated to undertake a full feasibility and cost benefit analysis on a Flood Relief Scheme for the Lower Morrell River covering the Turnings, Alasty and Killeenmore areas of Straffan and Sallins. These areas had suffered significant flooding in recent years and a Report into Flood Alleviation had been prepared in 2002, the JB Barry Report. That report made recommendations based on a 1 in 50 year design standard but current OPW requirements are for flood relief works to be designed for the 1 in 100 year design standard with an additional allowance of 20% for climate change.
The funding provided now will enable the Barry Report on Flood Alleviation to be updated to the new standards. Tenders for the Detailed Design and Cost Benefit Analysis were likely to be sought this Summer. Deputy Stagg congratulated the staff in Kildare Co. Council and the Lower Morrell Flood Action Group for their success in securing funding for the Reports
