A young woman appeared before Kilcock District Court last Tuesday, June 5, charged with being a pedestrian on the motorway, being intoxicated in a public place and being drunk and a danger to traffic.

Judge Patrick Clyne heard evidence of Samantha O’Brien, whose address is listed as 16 Clois an Blian, Kinnegad, Westmeath being apprehended by Garda Garvan Kelleher on May 24 last at Killickaweeney, Kilcock, on the M4.

The court heard that she was observed walking on the inside lane of the motorway causing an obstruction to oncoming traffic.

She had a fuel container and she threw it at a car.

Representing her, David Powderly explained to the court that she was in a car of people which had run out of fuel on the motorway and broken down.

She was the only woman in the car and was dispatched with a gerrycan to find petrol.

“She was pretty browned off about it,” Mr. Powderly explained.

“She’s lucky her mother isn’t paying for her grave,” Judge Clyne noted, and remarked that it was a very dangerous thing to be doing.

Ms. O’Brien agreed, and said she understood.

It was agreed that a donation of E250 was made to the Court Poor Box, to be directed to Kilcock Meals on Wheels.
