White’s Castle has been sold for €195,000.

The landmark Athy propoerty was included in a distressed properties acution this morning, Friday, July 6, in the Shelbourne Hotel and had a knock-down reserve price of just €50,000.

Leinster Leader reporter Lisa Deeney attended the auction and kept readers up to date on Twitter at @DeeneyLisa

There were two telephone bidders who drove the price up from an opening bid of €115,000, to €195,000.

The Leader has learned that the new owners are Galway based, in their 40s, and have plans to do up the Castle.

In 2005 the castle was sold to local businessman Gabriel Dooley for €1.2 million, some years after the death of previous owner Sean Doyle.

However, the investment company which held its ownership went into Anglo-Irish Bank-appointed receivership last year.
