Weather and strong sun “a factor” in road death of Celbridge County Council worker

THERE has been shock and sadness at the death of a Kildare County Council worker on Wednesday.
Kevin O’Sullivan, who has worked for the Council for 22 years, died following a tragic accident on Wednesday afternoon, 9 January.
Mr. O’Sullivan (59), from St. Patrick’s Park in Celbridge, was pronounced dead at Naas Hospital following the accident which took place around 3.00pm at Graiguesallagh, near Ladychapel on the Maynooth/Rathcoffey road.
The accident took place during roadworks on a straght stretch of road. Drainage works were takeing place and Mr. O’Sullivan was directing traffic.
He was struck by a car, driven by a 68-year old man, who was the sole occupant of the car.
The driver of the car, who is familiar with the road, is said to be devastated by the incident.
Gardai at Leixlip say that the weather conditions, in particular a very strong sun, were a factor leading to the accident. Their investigations are continuing.
KCC spokesperson, Annette Aspell, speaking on behalf of Mayor Micheal ‘Spike’ Nolan and County Manager, spoke of “the tragic and untimely death of our colleague and friend Kevin O’Sullivan, who worked in the Maynooth/Celbridge Area.
“Kevin has given over 22 years of loyal and dedicated service to Kildare County Council. Our thoughts and sympathies are offered to Kevin’s family and friends and also to his co-workers in the Maynooth/Celbridge Area,” she said.
Kildare County Council’s Road Safety Officer, Declan Keogh, expressed his shock and sadness at the news and extended his condolences to the victim’s family and close colleagues within the council. “This is the worst case scenario for any council employee, and my sympathies are with his family and colleagues at this time,” he said.
