Two Naas school students took part in a record-breaking climb of Mount Kilimanjaro.

17-year-olds Rory McDermott and Andrew O’Neill from Naas CBS were two of 117 students, teachers and fundraisers from around Ireland who reached the summit of Africa’s highest mountain on Wednesday 22 August. With climbing crew, the total number was 145 people, the largest group ever to reach the peak.

Rory’s father Rory Snr told the Leinster Leader that the two teens completed a 12-week training programme before setting off, during which they climbed the highest peaks in Ireland.

This, however, was an altogether different challenge. Reaching the 5,895m (19,341ft) peak took six-and-a-half days of climbing. The trek back down took two days. Altogether the group were away for 12 days.

They arrived back into Dublin Airport last Tuesday 28 August. The group raised nearly €100,000 for Our Lady’s Children’s Hospital, Crumlin and the Chernobyl Children’s Project.

According to Rory McDermott Snr, Rory and Andrew raised about €1,000 each. He wished to express “thanks to everyone involved, especially the local people of Naas” who supported the guys on their way.
