Trim councillor fined in Kilcock court for mobile phone offence
A Fine Gael councillor has agreed to pay to a sum to charity after he was found driving while holding a mobile phone while driving.
William Fay (39), a Trim town councillor, of Knightsbrooke, Trim, was stopped was seen in the Maynooth area with the device to his ear. “I was under a lot of stress,” he told Judge Desmond Zaidan at Kilcock District Court last Tuesday, February 7.
“It was a tough day,” he said, adding he was a public representative.
After Mr. Fay said he was in the livestock business, Judge Zaidan said he should try and promote debt forgiveness in Government. “Try and stop kicking the people when they are down,” he said.
Mr. Fay said he was only in politics a short while.
Judge Zaidan asked him what he wanted to do and Mr. Fay said: “I’m the defendant. You’re the judge. I broke the law and I’m here to suffer the consequences.”
Mr. Fay said he was not in financial difficulties but he added: “I’m in the cattle business. It has problems. It is always a difficulty.”
After speaking to a solicitors, Mr. Fay, like some others who are given the option, offered to pay €500 to the St. Patrick’s Day Parade committee in Maynooth, in place of a conviction.
