Temporary closure of Athy courthouse
Athy District Court has been closed temporarily for remedial works.
Athy Courthouse has been closed since late July to allow the Office of Public Works to carry out essential remedial works.
It is expected that these will take approximately eight weeks to complete. It is understood these works are essential periodic maintenance works.
Sittings of Athy District Court due to take place in Athy Courthouse on 11th September and on 25th September will instead take place in Naas Courthouse, Main St, Naas.
Sittings of Athy District Court will resume in Athy Courthouse on 9th October next.
The courthouse was designed by Frederick Darley and built in the 1850s. A detached, six-bay, two-storey, Tudor Revival style building with double-pitched intersecting roofs, there are two-storey offices at the south end, and the original north entrance was converted into toilets in 1990.
The building was originally the town’s corn exchange.
The Leader understands the full closure of the Athy courthouse is not on the Courts Service agenda, in that this is only a temporary closure due to essential maintenance works.
Come October, court sittings will resume every second week in Athy over two days.
