Stop for Kildare lollipop ladies
County Kildare's School Wardens
Drivers who roar past school lollipop ladies might find themselves on the receiving end of penalty points.
That’s the reminder from Kildare County Council’s road safety officer Declan Keogh, as schools reopen this week after the summer break.
In the first six months of this year, 22 motorists have received points for driving through a school crossing as the warden is holding up a stop sign.
According to Mr Keogh, there were reports last school term of a number of “near misses” because drivers failed to stop for schoolchildren.
“This is a very serious issue; a school warden has the authority to stop and hold traffic to allow school children to cross a road safely and entirely,” he said. “Drivers are putting the warden and students at great risk by either ignoring the instruction of the warden or not paying attention. Drivers must obey the warden and have patience for the safety of everyone.”
Kildare has almost 30 adult school wardens and 150 junior wardens serving schools across the county.
Mr Keogh also reminded parents to make sure they park safely and legally outside schools while dropping off their kids. He warned that traffic wardens would patrol outside schools if there is a persistent problem.
