Special tributes paid to deceased Rathangan councillor
KILDARE County County paid its own special tribute to Rathagan’s Jimmy O’Loughlin on Monday, January 28.
Councillors who knew the former councillor, spoke of what Liam Doyle, called his “wonderful intelligence and generosity”.
First elected to the Council on 18 June 1974, he served the Council, with distinction, including three spells as chairman, attending his last meeting as a councillor on 3 May 1999, Mayor Michael Nolan said.
Cllr. Liam Doyle said: “He showed me a lot about local government. He was small in stature but was able to punch well above his weight.”
Jimmy was a family man, and his son Cathal was particularly special to him. “Jimmy spoke of his love for Cathal and brought him everywhere.”
He enjoyed the respect of all and was a true Lilywhite. Enterepreneur and farmer, he made a great success of many businesses. Rathangan was his home and he left a legacy or love, respect and hard work.
A wonderful friend he was proud of his family’s political contribution and daugher, Cllr. Fional O’Loughlin, said Cllr. Doyle.
Labour’s Colm Purcell, who served with Jimmy, described him as his best friend on the Council.. “He was funny but not a fool, a charming and intelligent man.”
Cllr. Paddy Kennedy (Ind) said Rathangan had lost “a great servant and friend.”
Cllr. Senan Griffin (FG) described him as “a man of peace... a social worker who could see the other point of view.”
On behalf of staff, County Manager, Michael Malone, voted their sympathies to Jimmy’s family, his wife, Mary, and especially, Fiona and Cathal. “Clearly he was held in very high esteem,” said Mr. Malone.
