Slashed tyres on more than 25 cars in Clane

Gardai are seeking witnessese to the incident.

Over 25 cars had their tyres slashed in Clane in the early hours of Monday morning, November 12.

The tyres were slashed between 2am to 4.30am in a number of estates in the town including Oatfield Park Hillview Green, Loughbollard Estate and into Capdoo Lane.

Between one and three tyres were slashed on each car, and some had flower pots thrown through the windscreens.

Gardai say they recovered in Capdoo the knife they believe was used in the attacks. They are appealing for witnesses in all those areas to come forward.

“They can come and speak to me in private if they wish,” Sgt Paul Reilly explained.

He is hopeful that anyone with CCTV can identify those involved.

“We believe there’s local youths involved. We have a number of people who can vouch that they saw a number of people travelling through the area.

“There is an extreme amount of anger in the community this morning. Some people are having to fork out over €300 just to get to work, which all of these families can ill-afford at this stage,” he added.

He said it was possible that the group were coming home from a party.

Local councillor Pádraig McEvoy added that in some cases, refuse bins were set of fire. “One lady discovered her flat tyres just as she set out to hospital for her cancer treatment. Another victim was telling me that he has to pay €210 to replace three tyres on his car. A third person’s property escaped a serious fire when a passer-by intervened to move a bin on fire out of the way.

A public meeting on the lack of Garda resources in County Kildare will be held in the Westgrove Hotel, Clane, at 8pm next Monday, November 19.
