Silverware and a mattress on Chinese Ambassador’s Newbridge tour

THE Chinese Ambassador Luo Linquan visited Newbridge Silverware last Wednesday as part of a whistlestop tour of Newbridge.

He was given a guided tour of the factory and the museum alongside Cllr Paddy Kennedy, Newbridge Mayor Murty Aspell and Mayor of Kildare Michael ‘Spike’ Nolan. He took great delight in seeing how everything was made.

“I have been to Kildare many times,” he said.

“There is a big Chinese community in Newbridge and I believe as a people we have a lot in common. Our people are very friendly like the Irish and we have a big rural community in China.”

The CEO of Newbridge Silverware William Doyle, presented the Ambassador with 44 piece cutlery set, and welcomed him to Newbridge Silverware.

“I am very proud to welcome him here today,” he said. “We endeavour to do buisness in China and we are trying to create some opportunties.”

The next stop was Michael Murphy’s Furniture shop where the owner, Michael Murphy, agreed to to have a special mattress made for the Ambassador as he is suffering from a bad back.

“I have had a bad back for many years,” he said. “I hope it will work.”

Meanwhile on Friday, February 22 last a group of 41 Chinese visitors from Guangdong called into Kildare Village to do some shopping and to have lunch in Mai Thang and her husband Martin Andrews’ Chinese Restaurant in Monasterevin to mark the Chinese New Year.

They were accompanied by Counsellor Wu Lijun of the Chinese Embassy.

“They were actors, actress, who had performed in the National Convention Centre. They performed a variety of song, dance, acrobatics kung fu, and the famous changing of the faces which is one of the most famous act in China,” said Cllr Paddy Kennedy, who also attended the lunch.
