Salt of the earth to cure father

a combination of being made redunant and concern for a sick parent was the inspiration behind the new Salt Therapy clinic on Eyre Street, Newbridge.
The clinic was set up by Brenda Hetherington of Old Connell last year after she saw at first hand how the therapy aided her 67-year-old father, Thomas O’Neil, a local school bus driver for 24 years. He suffers from COPD (chronic obstructive pulmonary disease) which causes the body to produce large amounts of mucus in the lungs leading to wheezing, shortness of breath, persistent coughing, chest tightness and possibly death, due to complications caused by the disease.
“My father was unable to walk any distance,” she said, “He suffered recurrent chest infections that left him depleted and gasping for breath. He lived on antibiotics and steroids week in, week out.”
Thomas attended a salt therapy clinic in 2009 which involves breathing in microscopic particles of dry aero soled salt in a controlled environment to reduces inflammation in the lungs. After being made redundant the previous year Brenda opened her own centre. “My father has been attending twice a week since then and he is a new man.”
