Sallins playground land rezoning bid

A planning application has been submitted to Kildare County Council.

A planning application has been submitted to Kildare County Council.

AN attempt has been made to force Kildare County Council to provide a playground for Sallins.

Local councillor Paddy McNamara, who has campaigned for a playground on a site at Clane Road, secured the support of his council colleagues on the Naas area committee to push for a rezoning.

Effectively, the rezoning application will go before the full council an if successful the site will be designated for amenity/open space use only.

Council officials have resisted the idea on the basis that it has been allocated for housing but Cllr. McNamara said there is plenty of land elsewhere in Sallins for housing.

“It is a failure of good planning to say we have no playground in Sallins,” said Cllr. Darren Scully at the county council area meeting last week.

Because the council has no money, houses will not be built anyway for another 10 years at least, he added.

Cllr. Willie Callaghan said there were many sporting and youth organisation in Sallins but the village needs a playground.

Cllr. Seamie More likened the situation to that which prevailed in Ballyfermot in the 1970s. He said houses were built and it was not until many years passed that recreational facilities were provided.

Kildare County Council official Eamonn O’Sullivan insisted that efforts are being made to find another site in Sallins for a playground but no money may be available.
