Sale of Rathangan site to local businessman welcomed

Rathangan locals have welcomed the sale of the Killinthomas Camp just outside Rathangan to a local businessman.

The sale of the property which was once the site of the Ballydermot Bord na Mona camp and was more recently used by scouting organisations attracted considerable interest amongst Rathangan locals.

In fact, an email went around last week, calling on locals to attend a meeting in the Community Centre last Wednesday evening, April 14, in order to pool resources to enable the community to buy it.

Sean Judge of Lullymore Discovery Centre was the winning bidder last Thursday, April 15 in the Keadeen Hotel.

Speaking to the Leinster Leader, Stephen Conway who had sent the email around and who is a member of the CORE group explained that the email did not attract sufficient funds.

"There was a guiding price of n100,000 and it was felt at the meeting that there wasn't going to be sufficient funds to put in a bid.

"But with Sean Judge buying it, it all worked out better because that's a person with the capability to do something positive with the site," Mr. Conway remarked.

He explained that as a group, CORE was thinking about possible plans for the site and hoped that Mr. Judge, Coilte and other groups could combine to see a community facility on the site, and hopefully stimulate a few jobs in the future.

The site is beside the Killinthomas Wood, a popular facility for locals who walk there.

It includes what's left of the Bord na Mona camp, with nine different buildings such as dormitories, sheds, kitchen stores, a house and a washroom.

The total area of the buildings is 1,162 sqm or 12,508 sq ft. Many are derelict, and some were partially burned a number of years ago.

The original property comprised of a workers' hostel for the men who worked for Bord na Mona in the 1940s, 50s and 60s.

At the time of going to press, the Leinster Leader was unable to contact the new owner, Mr. Sean Judge, to ascertain what his future plans for the site are.
