Rise in Kildare’s cohabiting couples

KILDARE is close to top of the league when it comes to co-habiting couples, a look at the Census 2011 figures has shown.
The Census also shows Kildare residences are among the most crowded in the State.
Only the city areas of Galway and Dublin, and near neighbour, Fingal, have a higher proportion of co-habiting couples living in the county compared to husband and wife (or married) couples.
In Dublin city, the proportion of cohabiting couples, at 36.04%, was the highest in the country.
Galway city was next with 33.84%, followed by Fingal, which borders Kildare, on 28.85%.
In the Lilywhite county, 25.9% of all couples are not married, compared to 21.65% for the State as a whole.
The lowest proportion is in Donegal with 14.47%.
But when children are taken into account, the Kildare marriage rate rises relative to others.
Households with husbands, wives and children, comprise 52% of all private households in the county, close to the top of the division.
The proportion of cohabiting couples with children as a proportion of all households with couples, with or without children, is 12.23%, compared to a State average of 11.64%. Again Dublin city, with 18.6% tops the list.
The census shows that Kildare private housing units contain more people on average (2.95) than any other county except Meath (2.96), compared to 2.4 for Dublin city. It has a lower proportion (6.04%) of single persons households than most other counties.
