Rescued baby fox on road to recovery

A rescued baby fox, who suffered a broken paw and a badly bruised eye after he was hit by a car, is making a good recovery thanks to volunteers at Kildare Animal Foundation.

Little Dougie, as the six-week-old animal has been named, was found on a roadside in Monasterevin on Sunday, May 29, by a local woman and her daughter, who brought him to Kildare Animal Foundation, on the outskirts of Kildare town. The young cub spent two days at the vets. He was found to have a badly smashed leg and was also in shock.

“He was found on the side of the road, if he hadn’t been rescued he would have died within 24 hours,” said Foundation spokesperson Dan Donoher, who said the organisation is dealing with a lot of wildlife recently.

“The mother could have been killed and he could have wandered from the den, or the mother could have been moving him and could have dropped him if she got scared by a car.”

The little fox is now eating small amounts of kitten milk and puppy food and will be resting in a cage for three weeks. Thanks to the generosity of Foundation supporters after a Facebook appeal, a special ‘vet bed’ was donated to help with Dougie’s care.

The cub will require 24-hour care for the next few weeks and “hopefully he will be on the mend after that”, said Dan. The animal refuge will keep him until September, which would be a natural time for a fox of his age to leave its mother, before releasing him back into the wild. When Dougie’s leg is mended, the volunteers at the Foundation will withdraw from direct contact with him, so he does not become too tame to survive on his own.

Anyone who would like to make a donation towards Dougie’s care, or the work of Kildare Animal Foundation, can do so via Bank Account 51943527, sort code 901167. A fundraising Dog Show will take place at Round Towers GAA Pitch on June 19 at 2.15pm, and all support will be welcomed.
