Almost 400 young people have signed a petition seeking to have a skate park built in Naas.

Naas Town Council has been broadly supportive of the facility and the likely location is at the Caragh Road where a new playground is planned.

On Friday Naas CBS student Ryan Dobbins of Sundays Well handed the petition with 371 names to Naas Mayor Willie Callaghan at the Town Hall after school.

“There is a demand for the park because the nearest one is in Blanchardstown and a lot of people have use the town centre and other than that there are no places,” said Ryan.

The 13 year old organised the petiton and canvassed neighours, fellow students and customers to the skate shop at the Dandelion Market for support.

According to Cllr. Callaghan over the last few years Naas Town Council has set aside money to construct a skateboard Park and playground.
These facilities will be situated beside the sports grounds and swimming pool on the Caragh road.
Naas Town Council have also applied to the Leader Funding for extra money.
“We will be notified in the coming weeks if our application for funding was successful. If so it will allow us to construct a larger skateboard and playground. It will add to the facilities that are already available in the sport grounds on the Caragh Road, added Cllr. Callaghan.

In April the Leader reported that a total of E200,000 has been put aside by Naas Town Council over a number of years to pay for a facility for young skateboarders.
