Patsy 'Bud' Kelly: a Facebook sensation

A well-known Naas man has attracted something of a cult following on the social networking site Facebook.

Patsy 'Bud' Kelly is a well-known figure in Naas and Newbridge and a Facebook page opened "in his honour" has attracted over 1,200 "friends".

Mr Kelly originally hails from St Corban's Place in Naas and spends his time between Naas and Newbridge.

Andie Doyle, who set up the site, said it is was "in honour of PK the Bud a true Naas legend. Loved by all."

Ms Doyle, who is currently travelling in Cambodia said she set up the Facebook account because she is "from Naas all my life and knows how popular Patsy is".

"He has so many sayings and one liners and everybody always gets a great laugh from him (in the nicest possible way). So I just got this idea and gave it a shot and I cannot believe the reaction it's gotten. People from all over have added him as a friend and have shared many stories of their past escapades together. There have been numerous messages from people saying how much fun they have reading the comments every day and seeing the pictures," she said.

The website even features some Photoshop-ed pictures of Patsy at well-known Naas landmarks such as the ball sculpture and the canal.

Patsy himself had nothing to do with setting up the page.

"Sure I know nothing about computers," he told the Leader, adding it was done for entertainment value.

"As far as I'm concerned it (the page] is only a bit of craic. I've seen it and had a laugh and it's not doing any harm to anyone, is it?," he said.

He said the idea behind the page was Ms Doyle's alone and while he has no objection he also professed to be clueless as to why it has generated so much interest.

"I think it's because people want to have a bit of craic," said the affable Naas man.
