Nursing home jobs for Athy

The Carlton Abbey.

The Carlton Abbey.

A PLANNING application with Athy Town Council was recently lodged for the change of use of a well-known Athy hotel, The Carlton Abbey, to a nursing home.

The application was made by Sonas Nursing Home Management Limited just before Christmas. It has plans to convert the hotel into a 55-bedroom nursing home, with alterations to include a new staircase, lift, doors, windows and new fencing along the courtyard garden. If the planning application is successful, it is hoped work can begin in early March. It is hoped the nursing home will provide 60 to 80 jobs in Athy, and a similar number of construction jobs during the renovation.

The Sonas Group already owns nursing homes around the country, in Athlone, Roscommon, Sligo and Clonmel. It’s non-executive director is Bill Bradbury, who runs Bradbury’s and numerous restaurant outlets. The purchase of the hotel and renovation plans is a project that has been worked on for more than nine months. It is dependant on the Sonas Group receiving planning permission. A decision on this application will be due in approximately eight weeks.
