Nurney neighbours rally to support staunch GAA man

The community of Nurney is coming together to support All-Ireland GAA winner Eddie Molloy whose thatch cottage was gutted by fire less than two weeks ago.
65-year-old Mr Molloy, who won an All-Ireland medal with the over 40s team in 1990 and 1991, was making a cup of tea when he heard a cracking noise in his roof a few days after the New Year. He went outside to inspect the thatch roof and noticed a fire had started in the attic. Neighbours rushed to the scene to help as the fire rapidly engulfed the cottage at Blackditch, Nurney. The Fire Brigade were also alerted.
“We did our best to contain the fire and keep it under control,” said neighbour, lifelong friend and team-mate Seamus Deering. “We saved about 90 per cent of the furniture, photos, vintage items and antiques. His father, grandfather and great-grandfather were thatchers so there was a lot of memorabilia that was thankfully saved. Thanks to the fire brigade the walls were saved and we are hoping to re-roof and restore the cottage.”
Mr Molloy is widely known in Gaelic football circles both as a player and trainer, also hurling, handball and greyhound racing circles.
Mr Deering is now heading up the committe for the restoration of the cottage, by its nature the thatch cottage was not possible to insure.
“Eddie wishes to thank most sincerely his neighbours and friends who helped on the night of the fire, those who cleared the site the following day, offers of help for re-building, offers of porta cabin, furniture, house and accommodations and to Nurney GAA and local clubs and anyone else who helped in any way.”
The plan now is to restore the cottage and the fundraising kicked off last week in Martin’s of Kildoon. “A bank account is currently being opened and will be
