Newbridge Tourist escapes jail
Robert McTernan from Newbridge has escaped a jail term.
A young tourist from Newbridge who was accused of brandishing a knife during the theft of two cheese pastries known locall as cannoli from a family run Italian bakery in Boston has avoided jail.
Robert McTernan (25) was accused of stealing the cannolis worth about five dollars while flashing a large knife at Bova’s Bakery in the largely Italian North End district last Thursday.
Prosecutors reportedly agreed to reduce an armed robbery charge to larceny and offered nine months probation. He was ordered to return to Ireland, where he must perform 50 hours of community service.
The Leader understands that if he abides by the conditions the charge will be dismissed.
The chartered accountant, who reportedly arrived in Boston just hours before the incident for a two-week holiday, was accused of entering the kitchen of the family run Bova Bakery in the North End shortly after 3.30am, picking up a blue-handled knife, and concealing it by placing it against his forearm. The 25-year-old then reportedly demanded a cheese pastry called a cannoli. Once handed the cannoli, Mr McTernan, who played rubby for Newbridge Rugby club, allegedly held his finger to his lips and told the employee to “shush.”
He was arrested shortly afterwards, but police were reportedly unable to locate the knife during a search.
