A bunch of tough cookies from the Performance and Fitness Academy gym in Tougher’s Business park took part in an unusual fundraiser last Sunday.

Led by Newbridge postman Pa Tierney, they completed three miles of excruciating ‘burpee’ exercises in order to raise money for a seriously ill child.

15 brave but fit volunteers, led by Milltown man Pa and gym owner Niall Munnelly, slogged through 4,800 burpees between them in less than an hour.

“We are all training in the Performance Academy together and we like to push each other on!” he said of the plucky volunteers who he roped in.

The fundraisers calculated that one mile of burpees equated to 1,600 of the energy-sapping exercises, which incorporate a press-up followed by a swift jump.

The money they raised is going to help toddler Kasey Kelly from Dublin, who is suffering from a rare brain tumour. Her family has brought the baby to Boston to give her a chance at life-saving, but costly, treatment.

Although he didn’t know the family, Kasey’s story touched the heart of Pa. His own parents died from cancer and he decided to fundraise on her behalf.

Pa, who used to weigh 21 stone before starting an exercise programme, is also doing an Ironman competition in July to raise money for the cause. The event on Sunday raised about E600.For more information, log on to www.kareforkasey.com.
