A 66 year old Newbridge man has been sentenced to six years in prison after he pleaded guilty to numerous cases of sexually assault on his daughter, his sister-in-law and three other women, when they were all between the ages of five and eight.

Hubert Gannon, whose address is listed as 27 Moorefield Park, Newbridge pleaded guilty to 19 sample charges out of 72.

The offences started in the 1970’s and ended more than 25 years ago.

At Naas Circuit Court this morning, Thursday, July 26, he received 19 sentences, ranging from 18 months to eight years, with the last two years suspended.

Fifteen of the charges related to Sexual Assault, contrary to Section 6 of Criminal Law, while four were contrary to Section 10 of the Rape Act.

All sentences will run concurrently.

In summing up the case, Judge Leonie Reynolds outlined the devastating effect the crimes had had on the victims, saying that the Victim Impact Statement of the defendant’s daughter Caroline Storey made for “harrowing reading”.

She noted that he had shown no remorse for his crimes and that his “last minute attempt at an 11th hour apology” indicated that he had “very little insight into his offending, to say the least”.
