A little bit of history was made at Naas District Court on Wednesday, May 16 when, for the first time in Kildare, the court dealt with a juvenile offender using the Family Conferencing Scheme.

The young man, who cannot be identified because he is not 18 years old, was charged with possession of drugs and possession of drugs for sale or supply at his home in Sallins towards the end of last year.

In the court, Judge Desmond Zaidan asked the young defendant who is 17 years old, how he found the scheme.

The teenager spoke very enthusiastically and clearly about it. “It gave me the chance to come to an understanding of what I had done,” he said,

“I didn’t get it. It didn’t get what I had done before,” he said.

The court heard that the defendant’s mother has paid his drug debts which amount to E2,550, and that he is paying her back. He has already made a payment to her.The case was put back until November to monitor the defendant’s progress.
