New recruits pass out at Curragh Camp

THIRTY nine recruits from the 101st recruit platoon passed out of basic training the the gymnasium in the Curragh Camp on Tuesday,January 29.
There were 19 recruits from Kildare including brother and sister team Wayne and Chloe Foy from Suncroft, and champion boxer Robert Carty from Prosperous who has five Leinster titles, and five Irish titles under his belt. Champion cyclist Robert Deegan from Newbridge who has represented Ireland internationally, also graduated.
Other Kildare recruits who passed out included Sean Campbell, Newbridge; Colm Hill, Newbridge; Dean Hyland, Kilcullen; Shane McGuinness, Clane; Joshua Nugent, Kildare; James McKernan, Kildare; Tom Dunne, Kildare; Padraig Fogarty, Kilcullen; Owen Morrissey, Newbridge; Conor Moynahin, Newbridge; Sarah O’Neill, Brownstown; Jordan Seymour, Kildare; Dean O’Neill, Athy; Ethan Warren, Kilcullen and Ian Hanley, Curragh Camp.
The recruits were presented with their scrolls of achievement by the General Officer Commanding the Defence Forces Training Centre, Brigadier General Seamus O’Giollain. The event was attended by the recruits family and friends, many of whom are currently serving or retired members of the Defence Forces.
Their training started on September 25 last year and was overseen by Lt Darragh Kennedy and Sgt Gary O’Brien of the 1st Mechanised Infantry Company based in the Defence Forces Training Centre, Curragh Camp.
The four months of training was taken up with lessons on drill, basic weapons training including rifle, general purpose machine gun training and grenade throwing, physical training, field craft lessons, lessons on communications equipment, unarmed combat and medical training. They also undertook a number of exercises and spent two weeks in the Glen of Imaal where they practiced section level attacks, patrolling and completed a defensive ‘dig in’ exercise.
The platoon’s next phase of training will last 12 weeks and once completed the platoon will be qualified to serve overseas.
