Newbridge woman, Sonia Treacy, took part Run for a Life event at the weekend just two months after receiving a kidney transplant to honor the life of her donor.

“It was brilliant,” said Sonia. “If somebody had of told me when I was in hospital that in two months time I would be walking 3k I would not have believed them. To be able to honour my donor was fantastic. I didn’t want to do it in a certain time or to run it - I just wanted to finish.”

Almost 400 adults and children f supported the family event called ‘Run for a Life’ which was organised by the Irish Kidney Association, and took place at Park West Business Park, Dublin 12 on Saturday, October 13 last.

“I had huge support,” she added. “All my family turned up and I heard ‘come on Sonia’ as I went round. It is still very early days for me and still very emotional at times. The best thing I can do now is to go out and live my life the best way that I can. There will never be enough thank yous from me, my family and my friends.”

The fundraising event, which is a celebration of life through sport, coincided with European Day for Organ Donation and Transplantation which is organised by the Council of Europe and aims to raise awareness about the increasing demand for organ donors.

“It is overwhelming,” she added. “You can’t believe it is over. I do have a new type of energy. The frustration that comes with dialysis means that you are afraid to plan. But now I see a little bit more in the future for me.”
