Naas man Paddy Travers must have shivered a bit as he watched the crowd gather around a grave in St. Corban’s Cemetery, Naas, on Saturday morning (April 14). It’s not every day a man gets to watch his own funeral.

Paddy plays Lar in a short film being made by a group from Naas and surrounds, and he couldn’t resist dropping in to watch his screen family mourn his loss due to cancer.

The film, ‘If Winter Comes’, is written by Paul O’Brien, who is from Harristown but lives in Roseville, Naas. Directed by Paul Sheehan (Roseville, Naas) with Director of Photography Prosperous man Ger Boland, it centres on the relationship between an old man and his granddaughter Amy (played by Sarah Fleming from St. Joseph’s Road).

Sarah’s mother Ann Fleming plays her screen mother as well, and another Naas man Padraig Doyle plays the father.

The themes involved in the film, the inevitability of death and the natural order of life, will strike a chord with most people.

Other roles include the oncologist (Sheila Peelo, Roseville), teachers (Moll Fullam and Eilish Rafferty), students (played by pupils from Moll Fullam’s theatre group based at the Moat Club) and driver (Sean Deane, co-owner of super racehorse Quevega, who is set to follow success at Cheltenham with another at Punchestown ).

The crew includes Eddie Walsh (sound), Theresa Murray O’Meara (assistant director), Grainne Hunt and Janet Little (make-up) and Sarah Doyle (clap board).

The film is being shot at various locations around the town and Director Paul Sheehan sent out an appeal for extras for the funeral scene. Members of the Moat Club, Naas Musical Society and friends and family of the actors and crew turned out to pay their last respects.

“We were delighted with the turn out and have to extend a huge thank you to everyone. It was a cold morning but the rain held off; an excellent day for a funeral,” said Mr. Sheehan.

Filming will continue over the next few weeks and “If Winter Comes” should be ready for its premiere in October.
