Murphy calls for Treaty delay
Catherine Murphy
Kildare North TD, Catherine Murphy, has urged the Government to delay the Treaty Referendum as Germany very likely to postpone their own ratification.
After the the German Socialist Democratic Party said it want to delay ratification of the Fiscal Compact until at least mid-June, Deputy Murphy, who is opposed to the Treaty, called on the Irish Government “to extend the same courtesy to the Irish people.” As the vote in the Bundestag requires a two-thirds majority for approval, a postponement is virtually certain to happen. “If parliamentarians in Germany think it prudent to wait until the outcome of the elections for France’s National Assembly in order to see what emerges from the new French administration with regard to the terms of the Treaty before they vote on it, I think that the Irish people deserve the same time extension in order to have all the information to hand before making their decision on the Treaty,” she said.
