The man who is charged with cutting a Newbridge man’s ear off, has pleaded guilty to the charge at the Circuit Court in Naas this evening, Tuesday, November 13.
The plea represents a sea-change in the attitude of Mark Whyte to the charges against him.
Gardai have given evidence at court appearances in the past that when first arrested Mr. Whyte, whose address is listed as 1613, Pairc Mhuire, Newbridge, warned that the case wouldn’t “get near a court, I’ll make sure of that”.
At the time of his arrest, he remarked that the charge was “more bullshit from the handicapped Guards”.
Mr. Whyte has been in custody since he was jailed for contempt on May 1 last after he described the court proceedings at the time as “a kangaroo court”.
He has applied for bail on a number of occasions in both the District and High Court, but was refused.
In court appearances over the past few months, Gardai have continued to object to bail. On August 16 last, a Garda inspector gave evidence that the victim, Brendan Higginbottom, had approached Gardai twice, expressing his fear of Mr. Whyte, and alleging that he had been contacted by associates of the defendant.
“He’s so in fear that he has contemplated withdrawing his complaint,” Inspector Jim Doyle said.
The matter has been put back to February 26, 2013 for the preparation of a victim impact statement.
