Man injured, cattle killed, in Athy crash

A man has been injured, and up to 50 cattle are believed to have perished, as a result of a road accident on Sunday evening in Athy.

A cattle trailer overturned in a crash at Castlemitchell on the Athy to Stradbally Road.

The driver of the lorry has been taken to Portlaoise General Hospital, and it is not yet clear as to the extent of his injuries.

Initial reports suggest that about 40 cattle were killed in the crash. The remaining livestock at the scene were being put down late Sunday evening.

The crash occurred shortly before 7pm.

Traffic diversions were in place around the incident.
