Kilmeague shooting – investigation continues
The dead man, Ned Hamilton.
The investigation into the Kilmeauge shooting which resulted in the death of Edward ‘Ned’ Hamilton has not concluded yet.
Sources close to the investigation say that no decision has been made as to whether there will be any prosecution as a result, and that there is a lot of work left in the probe.
It is likely that a file will be sent to the DPP.
Mr. Hamilton, 33, died in the early hours of Saturday, December 29, at a house in Ballintine, Kilmeague in what is believed to have been an accidental shooting.
Another man in his 50s, who was injured in the shooting, has since been released from hospital.
Although he lost his thumb in the incident, he is expected to make a full recovery.
Mr. Hamilton was originally from Caragh, and had lived in Rathangan and Maynooth in the past.
He was laid to rest on Saturday morning following funeral Mass in Maynooth.
He was interred in Whitechurch cemetary, which is in the townland of Baronrath, near the Turnings, just off the Kill to Straffan road.
Mr. Hamilton’s grandfather, Christy Phelan, is also interred at that cemetary.
At the age of 48, he was killed on June 22, 1975 when he intercepted a group of loyalists who were planting a bomb on the railway line.
Mr. Hamilton was known to Gardai, and was associated with senior drugs and crime figures in the north west Kildare area.
