A Kildare woman has been picked to be one of 12 riders for the St. Patrick’s Derby charity race on March 14 at the Cheltenham Festival.

Sally Ann Grassick, originally from Newtown Stud near Naas, will ride the race in memory of her father, the late horse breeder Brian Grassick who passed away from skin cancer in 2009.

This is the fourth running of the race, in aid of Cancer Research, and has raised over £650,000 to date.

A freelance journalist and amateur jockey, Sally Ann lives in Chantilly, France and presents international racing for Equidia, the French racing television channel.

She moved to France in 2007 having gained experience with Channel 4 Racing and the BBC.

Her sister Cathy explained: “I know that he [their father Brian] would have been delighted to see her ride at Cheltenham and I’m sure that he will be there with her in spirit on the day shouting in her ear to push harder!

“She is very excited about the chance of a lifetime to ride at the Cheltenham Festival but it is also very important to her to raise as much money as possible for such a worthy cause.

“Now that she has made the cut she now has the challenge of finding a horse to ride and getting fit in the current freezing temperatures along with raising the minimum £5,000 in sponsorship. We are hoping that, with kind donations from our family and friends, we will raise lots of money for cancer research over the next two months.

“Any sponsorship, no matter how small, will be hugely appreciated.”

Readers can donate directly to Sally Ann’s fund by cheque or through justgiving.com/SallyAnnGrassick.
