Kildare town gears up for half marathon and RunFun fest

The first Kildare half marathon heads off from the Curragh Racecourse at 1pm this Sunday, May 9.

The inaugural FunRun festival will be held at the finish line in Kildare town with tons of food and fun for all the family.

The 13.1 race has attracted nearly 2,000 entrants for the Lilywhite county's first-ever half marathon event.

Runners will take off from the Curragh Racecourse and go through the Curragh Camp before heading to Ballysax. After running through Martinstown and cut bush, they will pass by Browns Yard and Sheshoon stud.

The horse-breeding scenery will continue as they pass by the Irish National Stud at Tully East, before they make the finish line at Kildare town.

Gardai are flagging traffic delays and access restrictions all along the marathon route for the race's duration.

There will be restrictions for residents of the Curragh Camp, including access into and out of he camp.

There will be considerable delays accessing the M7 motorway north and south bound at the Newbridge/Curragh junction on that day.

Meanwhile, organisers would also like to flag delays for all residents living in Kildare Town and surrounding areas with access into and out of the town considerably more congested on Sunday morning from 11am.

There will be a strong army presence at the event, as they are providing tanks which will be used as the event's lead and tail support vehicles.

The three main charities being supported are the Marie Keating Foundation, St Vincent de Paul and the Special Olympics.

Meanwhile, supporters are being told to come hungry to Kildare town on the day, as there will be a fantastic array of farm food stalls and a barbecue run by local restaurants to welcome the runners over the finish line.

The inaugural RunFun festival will take place in the town's square all afternoon and there will also be children's entertainment from Tricky Tricksters.

Supporters enjoying the RunFun will be able to see all the race action live on a big screen in the town.
