Kilcullen celebrates launch of new youth club

Kilcullen Youth Club celebrated the launch of its new drop-in centre, KiYC2, last Thursday.
They hosted a gig their new location, Kilcullen Tennis Club. The night was a great success and featured many local bands including INDIUM, Flock of Budgies, Falling Feet First, Slap!, and Fool the Joker.
Planning and development for the new drop-in Centre has been going on since the beginning of the summer. It was initially conceived as part of the O2 “Think Big” project by members of the existing Friday night drop-in club.
Facilities in the new location, which is based in the Tennis Club at the top of the town, include a kitchen, two pool tables, an air hockey table and a table tennis board. There is also a band room, which can be rented by local groups looking for a space to practice.
The aim of the centre is “to provide a source of entertainment and a place for young people to go”, according to the organisers. It is open every Thursday night from 7pm until 9.30pm, but from September onwards it will also be opening on a Tuesday night. Entry is E2 and no membership is required.
“It’s an excellent facility, particularly for young people in Kilcullen,” said Olivia Byrne, one of the youth leaders in Kilcullen Youth Club. “It’s a place where teenagers can go to meet new people and it gives them opportunities that they wouldn’t find anywhere else.”
Kilcullen Parish Youth Club already runs a drop-in centre in the Kilcullen Parish Centre on Friday nights for over-13s. This will continue to run alongside the new facility in the Tennis Club. The club is enrolled in the EU Youth in Action program and the European Voluntary Service and it also promotes and participates in the Gaisce award. At present there are also five leaders involved with the O2 Think Big Project. The drop-in centre is open to anybody aged 13 or older, but there are also clubs for younger age groups.
