ODOURS may return to the area surrounding Kerdiffstown dump as drilling work gets underway.

A series of boreholes are to be drilled deep into the landfill and work started yesterday (August 13).

The drilling work is part of the huge clean up operation at the dump which is continuing.

Three rigs will begin to drill a series of boreholes on and adjacent to the landfill site. These boreholes will help the Environmental Protection Agency to gather more data on the site.

This information combined with the recent geophysical survey samples from these new boreholes “will increase our knowledge of the site and inform the design of the site remediation,” said the EPA.

This phase of the site investigation will involve drilling holes deep into the landfill and drilling operations may generate some odour. The EPA says its contractors will be working hard to minimise these odours. If any members of the public experiences odours from the site, please contact the EPA at info@epa.ie.

The drilling is scheduled to last for four to six weeks.

The overall clean up operation at Kerdiffstown is set to take another 4 years to complete and it will cost in the region of E50m.
