KCC to cut staff perks

kILDARE County Council will commence trade unions talks in the coming weeks in relation to the payment of allowances, writes Lisa Deeney. It has been instructed by the Department of Environment to do so. “The council is not in a position to comment further while negotiations are ongoing,” it said in a statment to the Leader. Kildare County Council employs 294 outdoor staff, 75 retained firefighters and 482 technical/administrative staff. It offers 19 allowances to certain staff members, depending on their duties and responsibilities.

Allowances include unsocial hours allowance, senior fire officers on call allowance and weekend allowance for caretakers among others. At a recent Oireachtas Public Accounts Committee (PAC), a Department of Environment spokesperson said various perks for local authority staff were set be abolished. The Irish Congress of Trade Unions and Impact told the PAC that unions had not been consulted about the review and cuts of allowances. It is understood talks are just beginning with management in Kildare County Council with union meetings to take place in the coming weeks.
