Kildare County Council has hit back at complaints that Newbridge has a problem with weeds sprouting up all over the town, with the message that it is “doing its best” for the town. This recently-taken photo shows weeds growing wild in a phone box in Main Street.

“Kildare County Council is doing its very best to maintain front line services, such as street sweeping and cleaning, against a background of steadily decreasing income.” said Annette Aspell of Kildare County Council.

“Central Government support and rates income has reduced significantly over the past four years where the Council has reacted to this down turn by implementing a broad range of efficiencies and savings.”

a local business man, who wished to remain nameless, raised his complaints with Leinster Leader citing his concern for the Newbridge 200 Festival which will take place this September.

“I pay E40,000 a year in rates,” he said. “Where does that money go? Why can’t the town be kept clean and weed free? We have the Geard Manley Hopkins Festival with international poets visiting Newbridge this month and in September the Newbridge 200 Festival. What kind of message does it send out if the town is full of weeds?”

In response Kildare County Council said “it cannot respond to all requests and works have to be prioritised in the context of the financial and human resources that are available.”
