‘I never punish poverty’ - Judge

“I always punish dishonesty and wrong doing, but I’ve never punished poverty.”

They’re the words of Judge Patrick Clyne, a judge sitting at Naas District Court last Wednesday, June 13 after he had heard evidence of an unemployed man who stole food from Tesco to feed his family.

Juris Preide whose address is listed as 5 The lane, College Farm, Newbridge was arrested by Garda Christina Brady on June 3, 2012 at Tesco, Monread Road.

The court heard that he had attempted to steal €143.41 of groceries.

He was apprehended by security staff and admitted his guilt. The goods were recovered.

He has five previous convictions, all road traffic offences and all related to one incident.

The 32 year old man stole for his two kids and his wife, Arthur Denneny, acting on behalf of the defendant explained.

“Neither his wife nor himself are working. He was working for a manufacturing company but was made redundant. However he has an interview tomorrow (last Thursday).

“He is mortified to be here.”

The Judge applied the Probation Act.
