Heroin addict wants to stop his drug use
HE’S on heroin and wants to stop, solicitor Paul Cunningham told Athy District Court when describing the predicament of his client.
The client, James Rowan, 1494 Castlepark, Kildangan, has been charged with a number of offences including criminal damage on 17 December last and taking Nike products from a shop in the Kildare Village Outlet on 27 March of this year.
Security staff recovered the goods, Judge Patrick Clyne was told at the 12 June sitting.
Mr. Rowan has 17 previous convictions, including those for theft, criminal damage, illegal drug use, drink driving and driving without insurance.
The Court was told he had broken a widow with his hand due to a row with his girlfriend.
Judge Clyne said he would be more impressed if Mr. Rowan had brought E125 with him to pay for damage rather than “tweak at my heartstrings.”
Mr. Cunningham said Mr. Rowan had been applying for places on rehabilitation courses but there is a six month delay.
Judge Clyne responded to this that “the delay” was almost a precondition for heroin users and one of “the tricks that go with addiction.”
The Judge adjourned the matter until 27 November to get what he described as “a complex report” from the Probation and Welfare Services.
As part of the conditions, he has required Mr. Rowan to sign on at Athy Garda Station one day a week but stay out of Athy, except for that.
In doing Judge Clyne said: “Monasterevin (Garda Station) is a dead loss. You don’t know what day it will open.”
