Gold thefts from Kildare Indian community
Athy man arrested as part of investigation into dissident republican activity.
Gardai are advising members of the Indian community to take precautions with their valuables, especcially their jewellery.
The warning comes following two almost identical raids on the homes of Indian families and the theft of, in each case, tens of thousands of euros worth of jewellery.
The first occurred last Tuesday, September 18 at the Castlefen estate in Sallins between 1.30 and 3pm.
The house was broken into via the front door and a large quantity of jewellery was taken. It is estimated to be worth E16,000.
And on Friday, again in the afternoon between 1.30 and 2.30pm a house in Cos Abhainn was entered via the front door and E15,000 worth of jewellery was taken.
Gardai believe there is a link between the two events.
Keeping in large amounts of jewellery is an Indian tradition.
Garda sources say that it is often gold, and often that gold is of a much higher quality than that which Irish families would have.
“We’re advising them to take precautions, to keep it in a safe and out of harms way,” the source said.
